A convicted sex offender who goes by “Pirate” was sentenced on Tuesday for attacking a disabled Idaho woman and burning her with a cigarette.
The woman said she gave permission to Pirate, 43, whose birth name is Daniel Selovich, to stay at her Downey, Idaho, home in November 2020 after the two met on a dating app, the Idaho State Journal reported. The woman has disabilities that were not specified, according to the East Idaho News.
During the stay, the woman said Pirate burned her several times with a lit cigarette, ashed it into her mouth, bit her hard enough to make her cry, and gagged her with his foot, according to police. He also reportedly took pictures of the encounter.
The woman said she feared coming forward to police out of concern that Pirate would retaliate against her. Sheriff’s deputies arrested Pirate on Nov. 11, 2020, at a Walmart.

Pirate initially faced two counts of felony aggravated battery, two counts of misdemeanor battery, and a felony enhancement for being a persistent violator for his treatment of the woman, according to the Idaho State Journal. He plead guilty to two misdemeanor battery charges and had all felony charges against him dropped as part of a deal reached with Bannock County prosecutors, according to court records.
Pirate was incarcerated at the Bannock County Jail for over a year, which is more jail time than could be ordered for the charges to which he pleaded guilty. He will not have to spend any more time in jail and was released in December, according to Fox News. He was ordered to pay a $515 fine.

“As the case progressed, the facts and circumstances changed somewhat, and at the end of the day, the offenses were more adequately addressed by the filing of misdemeanor charges,” Bannock County Prosecutor Steve Herzog said.
