SS Minnow: 40% would take a cruise ‘right now’

When Secrets reported yesterday on a University of Maryland study of mobile and Waze-like technology showing that just 35% of the country is following stay-at-home orders, many expressed surprise, even disbelief.

Today, we have further proof that a sizable chunk of the nation is eager to shed social distancing and stay-at-home recommendations and jump right back in to fun (and potentially dangerous) activities.

A new study from the Sports and Leisure Research Group that was shared with Secrets found that one-third would return to the activities they left behind when the virus crisis hit, including flying, staying at hotels, gambling at casinos, and even sailing on cruise ships, the initial ground zero for the U.S. coronavirus explosion.

Those numbers:

  • 40% would take a cruise.
  • 40% would stay in a hotel or resort.
  • 34% would attend a live sporting event.
  • 34% would visit a casino.
  • 33% would visit a theme park.
  • 32% would take a commercial flight.
  • 32% would see a movie in a theater.
Coral Princess
A passenger wearing a protective mask holds up a sign that reads, “Test Me,” as she stands on the balcony of the Coral Princess cruise ship while docked at PortMiami during the new coronavirus outbreak, Monday, April 6, 2020, in Miami.

But most want some conditions such as a COVID-19 vaccine before returning to the crowded venues, said the research study done in partnership with Engagious and ROKK Solutions.

“Having tracked public opinion in this sector for the past 29 years, the present COVID-19 crisis has generated the strongest headwinds,” said Jon Last, president of the Sports and Leisure Research Group, and an author of the study. He said that the partnership will continue to produce more studies as the crisis wanes.
