Liberia Ebola-free, says World Health Organization

Liberia is Ebola-free following 42 days of no new reported cases, the World Health Organization said Saturday.

The epidemic has killed more than 4,700 people in the country. The last reported case was a woman who showed symptoms of the disease virus March 20 near Monrovia, the capital of Liberia. She died March 27.

The World Health Organization noted the threat of another outbreak remains given Ebola cases in neighboring countries.

“While WHO is confident that Liberia has interrupted transmission, outbreaks persist in neighboring Guinea and Sierra Leone, creating a high risk that infected people may cross into Liberia over the region’s exceptionally porous borders,” it said.
