Why did Michelle Williams have an abortion?

Was Michelle Williams raped?

It’s a question I’d like to hear answered after her unseemly speech Sunday at the Golden Globe awards, wherein she said she was “grateful” for the right to have had an abortion.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do this without employing a woman’s right to choose,” she said, “to choose when to have my children, and with whom.”

Williams didn’t elaborate on the circumstances, but it sounded like she was advocating for abortion as a crude form of birth control.

I am pro-choice because I believe that women need the right to abort pregnancies for a lot of serious, even depressing reasons. But it should come with a stigma for anyone who would choose to have an abortion just because a pregnancy that resulted from consensual sex is an inconvenience.

Everyone in the audience applauded Williams’s very brave stance, declared in a room full of people who agree with her. And I guess that’s supposed to be the end of it. We’re not supposed to ask why Williams got an abortion. But if she’s going to talk about it in public, then I want to know more.
