Yulia Skripal eventually wants to return to Russia, despite attempted assassination

Yulia Skripal, the daughter of a former Russian spy, says she eventually wants to return to her native Russia, despite being poisoned with a nerve agent in March in the United Kingdom.

Russia has been blamed for the attack on Sergei and Yulia Skripal, though the country has denied responsibility.

“The fact that a nerve agent was used to do this is shocking,” Skripal told Reuters on Wednesday. “My life has been turned upside down.”

Skripal was in a coma for 20 days after she and her father were found unconscious on a public bench. She remained in the hospital for five weeks and is currently under the protection of the British state.

“We are so lucky to have both survived this attempted assassination. Our recovery has been slow and extremely painful,” she said in a statement.

“As I try to come to terms with the devastating changes thrust upon me both physically and emotionally, I take one day at a time and want to help care for my Dad till his full recovery. In the longer term I hope to return home to my country,” the statement continued.

The British government concluded that the pair was exposed to novichok, a military-grade nerve agent, at the front door of the former spy’s home.

The poisoning led to the expulsion of Russian diplomats around the world. President Trump ordered 60 Russian intelligence officials to leave the U.S. and closed the Russian consulate in Seattle. British Prime Minister Theresa May expelled 23 Russian diplomats.
