New York City schools will not punish students who participate in climate change strike

The New York City public schools announced last Thursday students who are participating in the upcoming climate strike protest will be able to receive excused absences.

The students will need to obtain parental consent to be apart of the worldwide organized event. The schools made their announcement after New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio warned the human race only has 10 years to save the planet from the effects of climate change.

“We applaud our students when they raise their voices in a safe and respectful manner on issues that matter to them. Young people around the world are joining the #ClimateStrike this week — showing that student action will lead us forward,” the school system tweeted.

They will also be encouraging class discussions about climate change and the importance of civic engagement.

The upcoming global climate strike’s purpose is to “sound the alarm and show our politicians that business as usual is no longer an option” and to “disrupt business as usual: from sports stars, actors and teachers to food industry workers, psychologists, delivery drivers, and everything in between.
