Pew: Biggest divide ever on wall, Trump approval gap widest in 60 years

America has “never been more sharply divided” over border security as it is over President Trump’s call for a wall, and neither side is ready to throw in the towel, according to the latest survey on immigration.

A new Pew Research Center survey said the divide in the nation over Trump, immigration, a border wall, and the resulting government shutdown is shocking. “These views have never been more sharply divided along partisan lines,” said the nonpartisan polling outfit.

The highlights point that out:

  • 88 percent of a border wall’s opponents “say it would not be acceptable to pass a bill that includes Trump’s request for wall funding, if that is the only way to end the shutdown.”
  • Among wall supporters, 72 percent “say a bill to end the shutdown would be unacceptable if it does not include Trump’s funding request.”

  • Democrats and Republicans disagree on whether the border wall would reduce illegal immigration into the U.S. and on the effect of the shutdown on the country.
  • 79 percent of Democrats say the shutdown is a “very serious problem.”
  • Just 35 percent of Republicans say the shutdown it is a “very serious problem.”
  • Trump’s support among Republicans and Republican “leaners” remains high at 80 percent.
  • 96 percent of Democrats and Democratic “leaners” disapprove of his job performance, the widest gap in six decades.
