The Trump campaign is postponing its rally in New Hampshire on Saturday, pinning the decision on concerns about Tropical Storm Fay.
“The rally scheduled for Saturday in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, has been postponed for safety reasons because of Tropical Storm Fay,” the reelection campaign said on Friday. “It will be rescheduled, and a new date will be announced soon.”
Press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters traveling to Florida with President Trump that it would likely be held in one or two weeks’ time.
The decision is a bitter blow for a campaign that hoped the event would mark a major reset after the disappointment of its recent rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which was dominated by headlines about poor turnout and staff members contracting COVID-19.
Trump is lagging far behind his Democratic rival Joe Biden in national polls and is eager to show that life is returning to normal.
This time around, the event was due to be held in an open-sided aircraft hangar to reduce the threat of coronavirus transmission. And officials were careful not to predict how many people would attend.
However, the change will provoke questions about whether a disappointing number of people RSVPd.
Tropical Storm Fay is forecast to hit the northeastern seaboard on Friday, bringing heavy rain and the potential for flooding, according to the National Weather Service.
