A growing number of truck drivers indicated they would have issues delivering goods to a city that made cuts or scaled down money being given to police departments, according to a new poll.
A total of 79% say they will refuse loads to cities with disbanded or defunded police departments, according to a study conducted by CDLlife.
“If something was to happen and you have to take matters into your own hands, and then you risk being prosecuted for protecting yourself,” one of the anonymous responses said.
“This is not an area you need to act fearless and think you’d look like a fool for saying no. … Imagine what kind of fool you look like for driving into a hot spot and putting your life in danger,” another said.
The poll was conducted using the CDLlife App for smartphones, and the website said it had received 1,283 responses as of June 13.
Since the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, several local governments have made plans to restructure or reappropriate funding to law enforcement.
Earlier this month, a veto-free majority of the Minneapolis City Council signed a pledge to dismantle the city police department as it is currently structured and reallocate funding to other areas of the city’s public safety budget.
“I will not deliver to an area with a disbanded police department. My life matter[s] and I do this for my family,” another response said for the study. “We are already at the mercy of these towns and cities with laws and hate against us for parking, getting a meal or even using a restroom.”
