Michael Cohen subpoenaed in Trump Foundation investigation: Report

President Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen has been subpoenaed by New York state investigators as part of their investigation into the Trump Foundation, according to a report Wednesday.

A spokesperson from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s tax department confirmed the subpoena to the Associated Press.

An investigation began earlier this summer into whether the Trump Foundation violated of state tax laws, the New York Times was first to report. Cohen, who has been in Trump’s orbit for years, could shed insight on various dealings of the Trump Foundation.

Cohen and Trump attorneys did not immediately respond to the Associated Press.

On Tuesday, Cohen pleaded guilty to charges including tax evasion, willful cause of unlawful corporate contribution, and excessive campaign contribution.

The campaign finance violations were related to payments Cohen made to porn star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, two women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump years ago. While court filings don’t mention Trump by name, Cohen said they were paid at the direction of the “candidate” in exchange for their silence on the affairs.

Trump denies that campaign funds were ever used to arrange the hush money payments.
