State board to rule in Goode place on Va. ballot

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia’s State Board of Elections will decide Tuesday morning whether former U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode will appear on the state ballot for president this fall.

Goode is seeking a spot on the ballot as the nominee of the conservative Constitution Party. He lost his congressional seat to one-term Democrat Tom Perriello in 2008.

Republicans are challenging his bid, raising questions about some of the signatures he tendered to qualify for the ballot. Goode’s presence on the ballot poses a risk to the GOP because he could drain some conservative support away from Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

That’s of particular concern in Virginia, a swing state where polls show Romney and President Barack Obama virtually deadlocked.

Two of the board’s three members are Republicans.
