At Least Eight Dead after Motorist Strikes in NYC ‘Act of Terror’

At least eight people are dead and 11 sustained “serious but non-life threatening” injuries after a motorist driving a rented truck veered onto a bicycle path in Manhattan Tuesday afternoon, the NYPD has confirmed.

The event is being investigated as a terrorist attack.

The suspect, who was driving a Home Depot rental truck, struck multiple people as he drove more than 10 blocks down the bike path before swerving into a school bus. Video footage shows the driver emerging and brandishing what appeared to be guns—police later said a paintball gun and a pellet gun were recovered at the scene. Officials said the driver shouted “Allahu Akbar” and ran through traffic before being shot in the stomach by officers and taken into custody.

A U.S. counterterrorism official told NBC News that no outside groups had claimed responsibility for the attack.

The New York Times reports:

Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference: “Based on information we have at this moment, this was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians.” Two law enforcement officials said the driver of the truck, a 29-year-old man who came to the United States in 2010, was in grave condition. One official said he had rented the truck in New Jersey. The motorist, driving south down the path in a Home Depot rental truck, hit numerous people as nearby Stuyvesant High School was letting out for the day, officials said. At least 15 people were injured, but officials were still working to assess the extent of the casualties.
