Sen. Lindsey Graham said he expects Democrats to join Republicans in voting to acquit President Trump within the next week.
“I’m increasingly optimistic that Republicans will move to a final verdict before Tuesday,” the South Carolina Republican told reporters Friday. “The president will be acquitted in a bipartisan manner.”
“We’re not blocking anybody’s witnesses. We’re just not going to legitimize the House choosing not to call a witness, dump it in our lap, and put us in a spot where if you call the witness, you’d be billing the courts out of judicial review of impeachment,” he added.
Republicans appeared to have whipped up enough votes to keep Democrats from trying to call witnesses. The move likely means a quick end to the Trump trial.
The White House is hoping it can use the president’s State of the Union address as a victory lap if Trump is acquitted beforehand.
