Oklahoma lawmakers propose ‘MAGA’ and ‘Keep America Great’ license plates to support veterans

An Oklahoma state senator has introduced a plan to raise money for local veterans by offering motorists the option to purchase license plates featuring two of President Trump’s campaign slogans.

Under the proposal, motorists would have the option of purchasing plates featuring the president’s 2016 slogan, “Make America Great Again,” and his 2020 reelection slogan, “Keep America Great.”

“This is a great way that people can support America and support those ideas of keeping America great,” Sen. Nathan Dahm said, according to KFOR-TV.

Dahm elaborated on the plan on his Facebook page.

Motorists would be charged a fee of $35 per year, and $20 of that fee will be donated to two local veterans groups. However, not all Oklahomans are in favor of the proposed bill.

“I know who started that ‘Make America Great Again,’ and I’m not in his corner,” said Lawrence Johnson, an Oklahoma driver.

Dahm responded to the critics by acknowledging that many Americans do not support the current president while noting that freedom of speech allows those who do to express themselves.

“There’s people that are upset with just the president in general, so I understand that people have those feelings, potentially negative feelings against the president, but the great thing is, here in America, you have freedom of speech,” Dahm said.

Oklahoma Senate Bill 1384 will require the approval of the state legislature and the Republican governor before the plates would be seen on the road.
