According to Va. State Senator L. Louise Lucas (D-Portsmouth), Mitt Romney has raised his poll numbers over the past few months by being white.
“Let’s be real clear about it — Mitt Romney is speaking to a group of people out there who don’t like folks like President Barack Obama in any elective or leadership position,” Lucas said Tuesday on a Hampton Roads radio show. “We know what’s going on here. And some people may be afraid to say it, but I’m not. … He’s speaking to that fringe out there who do not want to see anybody but a white person in a leadership position.”

The comments were a result of the recent Quinnipiac University Poll which shows that Mitt Romney’s numbers have caught up to President Barack Obama’s, even though the current president has campaigned heavily in the state.
“I absolutely believe it’s [the election] all about race, and for the first time in my life I’ve been able to convince my children, finally, that racism is alive and well,” she told John Fredericks of the John Fredericks Show on 1650-AM.
Lucas’ words come on the heels of a surprising drop in support for Obama from black communities across America. Obama’s recent declaration of support for gay marriage is a large part of the problem.
In the 2008 election, Obama was able to capture 95 percent of the black vote, which was probably the most significant contributor to his success over Republican candidate John McCain. If he loses even 10 percent of that vote, his chances for re-election could be in serious jeopardy.
Lucas, who is also a member of Obama’s Truth Team, clearly realizes Obama’s imperative to turn the political narrative away from failed jobs plans and rising unemployment.
