House lawmakers will meet with experts to brainstorm a way to study the causes, effects and treatments of concussions, the start of a comprehensive review.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee announced Thursday that on Jan. 25, it will hold a roundtable with leading experts from the medical, military, athletic and research communities.
“There’s a lot we just don’t know about head injuries,” said committee Chairman Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich.
Upton announced a committee review of concussions late last year.
“The more we learn about concussions and head trauma, the more we know that the ‘shake it off’ approach of yesteryear caused more risk and damage,” added Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Pa., who heads the committee’s oversight subcommittee.
Concussions in athletics have become a pressing issue in recent years, especially in the National Football League. Last year, the league settled a concussion lawsuit brought by thousands of former players for $900 million.
