Hurley takes a major step

Naval Academy grad finishes second in Nationwide Tour event

Leesburg native and Annapolis resident Billy Hurley III closed with an 8-under-par 64 Sunday in the Nationwide Chiquita Classic, finishing second behind Russell Knox and collecting the biggest check, $59,400, of his professional golf career.

With the finish, Hurley vaults to No. 22 on the Nationwide Tour money list. The top 25 at the end of the year graduate to the PGA Tour.

Hurley, a graduate of the Naval Academy who completed his five-year commitment to the service two summers ago, is enjoying the best stretch as a professional. In his previous Nationwide event, last month at the Wichita Open, Hurley finished fifth, earing $24,000. His last nine rounds on the Nationwide have been under par.

Hurley started the year with conditional status on the Nationwide, but his recent performance ensures that he will be eligible for most of the circuit’s 14 remaining events as he attempts to remain in the top 25.
