Eight firms in the Washington metro area were ranked on Working Mother magazine’s top 100 companies, based on caregiver leave policies, a company’s demographic profile, child-care options, flexibility programs, compensation levels, family-friendly programs and company culture.
The companies in the metro area that were chosen varied from law firms to the financial sector and the service industry.
These companies provide a “guiding light” and a “benchmark” for other companies, Working Mother Media CEO Carol Evans told The Examiner.
Fifty-eight percent of Washington-based law firm Covington & Burling LLP’s employees are female.
The company has a nearby subsidized day care center and offers part-time schedules and three months of paid leave for primary caretakers and four weeks for non-primary caretakers, according to Lee Tiedrich, a partner with the intellectual practice group and chair of the Covington Women’s Forum, a management-initiated effort to help women network.
Arnold & Porter LLP has three months paid primary caretaker leave and six weeks paid secondary caretaker leave, on-site childcare, and flexible and part-time work schedule options, spokeswoman Patricia O’Connell said.
Fannie Mae also provides an on-site subsidized day care center, with up to four months paid maternity leave, along with five days of family sick leave and various parenting classes, said Michelle Stone, senior program manager for corporate benefits.
Capital One has adopted flexible work arrangements and two months paid maternity leave, and two weeks paid paternity leave, spokeswoman Lahne Mattas-Curry said.
