A Trump donor reportedly agreed to pay President Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen $10 million to lobby for a nuclear project, just one of several alleged instances of Cohen profiting off of his inside connection to Trump.
Franklin Haney gave the contract to Cohen in April to get help completing unfinished nuclear reactors in Alabama, known as the Bellefonte Nuclear Power Plant, unnamed sources familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. Part of what Haney was seeking was a $5 billion loan from the government.
If successful, Cohen’s deal with Haney could have been one of the most lucrative agreements he made after Trump won the presidential election.
However, Trump has severed ties with his former so-called fix-it man, who is under federal investigation in New York regarding the work he did for Trump. Investigators are specifically probing whether Cohen engaged in unregistered lobbying after Trump went to the White House.
“Neither Mr. Haney nor Nuclear Development LLC ever entered into a contract with Michael Cohen or his affiliate for lobbying services related to the Bellefonte project,” Haney’s lawyer Larry Blust told the Journal. However, he declined to comment further about the project.
