The city of Virginia Beach released the resignation letter of the gunman who opened fire at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center on Friday, showing he resigned from his job hours before the shooting due to what he said were “personal reasons.”
DeWayne Craddock, a longtime employee of the city’s public utilities department, submitted his two weeks’ notice before he killed 12 people and wounded several others.
“It has been a pleasure to serve the City, but due to personal reasons I must relieve my position,” Craddock wrote.

Police haven’t determined Craddock’s motive, but authorities ruled out the possibility that he was fired or that his job was in jeopardy on Sunday.
“So many things are going on, and all the questions so far have been focused on whether or not he was fired and whether or not he was in the process of being fired. That’s a hard no,” Police spokeswoman Linda Kuehn said, according to the Virginian-Pilot.
The gunman, who was armed with a two .45 caliber handguns, died after police shot him. Four victims remain hospitalized.
