Obama praises NBA’s stand against gun violence

President Obama tweeted his support Wednesday for a gun control campaign starring several NBA stars that is set to air on Christmas.

“I’m proud of the @NBA for taking a stand against gun violence,” he tweeted. “Sympathy for victims isn’t enough — change requires all of us speaking up.”

The president was joined by Democratic presidential candidate and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley in expressing approval for the campaign and all efforts to end gun violence.

“I agree with [Stephen Curry], [Chris Paul] & [Carmelo Anthony],” O’Malley tweeted. “Gun violence is an epidemic. We need act immediately.” He also tweeted out a link to an ESPN article reporting on the campaign, which involves the three players he mentioned and Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah.

The 32-second ad, directed by Spike Lee, is affiliated with Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit organization founded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg that advocates for gun control.

Gun control has been an issue on every politician’s mind following highly publicized mass shootings in Colorado Springs, Colo., and San Bernardino, Calif.
