The art of bipartisanship
Republicans may be out of power, but Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell isn’t about to take a back seat to Democratic dominance. In fact, he took to the National Press Club on Friday to reassert the relevance of being Republican.
-“Obama will have to engage Republicans in order to achieve bipartisan cooperation.”
-“Anyone who belittles cooperation is essentially endorsing legislative gridlock.”
But the bipartisanship doesn’t always go both ways, as McConnell didn’t budge from a handful of Republican positions.
On Guantanamo: “I don’t think Guantanamo ought to be closed. I think it’s perfect for these people.”
On the Minnesota Senate race between Al Franken and Norm Coleman: “It ain’t over ’til it’s over.”
On a revised interrogation strategy: “It is a mistake to eliminate what are referred to as intensified interrogation techniques and use only military field manuals.”
On universal health care: “There’s no use in the second kick of a mule.”
Indeed, the more things change, the more things stay the same.
