Ex-first lady bodyguard in Ivory Coast charged

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) — Ivory Coast’s military prosecutor said Friday that the head of former first lady Simone Gbagbo’s bodyguard unit had been charged in connection with the country’s recent post-election violence, and that he is a prime suspect in the 2002 assassination of former President Robert Guei.

Ange Kouame said that Anselme Seka, known as “Seka Seka,” had been charged with crimes including murder and embezzlement during the violence, which erupted after former President Laurent Gbagbo refused to cede office after losing the 2010 election.

Seka was also questioned this week over the killing of Guei, who briefly served as president after a 1999 coup against President Henri Konan Bedie. Guei was killed in Abidjan in September 2002, on the same day a coup attempt was launched against Gbagbo.
