How this social media star leveraged supporting socialism into a multimillion-dollar lifestyle

As it turns out, being a socialist social media influencer is lucrative work.

Gamer and streamer Nicole Sanchez, whose online persona is “Neekolul,” made it big when a video of her popularizing the “OK, boomer” phrase while wearing a “Bernie Sanders for president” sweatshirt received more than 50 million views. In another “OK, boomer” viral video, she’s seen wearing a “Tax the Rich” sweatshirt and adds the hashtag #AOC2024, referring to socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Since the beginning, Sanchez has cultivated her online brand as a champion of young, next-generation progressives. Her following is concentrated among the millions of digital natives who support Sanders-style “democratic socialism.” Indeed, much of her digital commentary has specifically focused on the need to tax and destroy the upper class.

In one Twitch stream that garnered controversy, Sanchez said: “I just ate a cup o’noodle myself, but Jeff Bezos is out there eating a $1,000 steak … in his trillion-dollar mansion. … And then what are you doing? What are we doing? We’re here on my stream eating a cup o’noodle. All right? Exactly, you got to eat the rich, exactly.” (Emphasis added.)

What makes Sanchez’s story so curious is how quickly and successfully the socialist darling has managed to leverage her newfound internet fame to secure a multimillion-dollar lifestyle. She recently posted a picture of her posing with a BMW, presumably hers, with the photo tagged “Beemer Girl” in a play on words.

Even more gallingly, Sanchez just posted a YouTube video titled, $2,000,000 Apartment Tour (My New Apartment).

I watched it, losing multiple brain cells in the process, so you don’t have to.

Viewers are treated to a 10-minute virtual tour of Sanchez’s $2 million Texas apartment. It’s quite large and, by any average person’s standards, extravagant.

In one notable moment, Sanchez points out her wine fridge, noting that “we don’t have any wine in it, but it’s fancy, so.” Next, she touts her expensive Nespresso machine, only to note that “I actually don’t drink coffee, but, like, this is nice.” Later taking us through to her fancy bathroom, one of at least three shown on the video, she notes that “this is the bathtub, which I never use, but it’s nice or whatever.”

You get the picture. And I can’t help but notice a pattern here. Sanders himself came to political stardom as an open socialist who railed against “millionaires and billionaires.” But thanks to his rising stature and book deal, he’s now a millionaire himself with three homes. And, coincidentally, Sanders now mostly talks about “billionaires,” not millionaires, when he’s stumping against the rich.

This persistent theme of hypocrisy is more than just inconsistency. It’s revealing of a profound truth that Sanders, Sanchez, and others of their ideology refuse to admit.

Nobody really wants to live in a world where they can’t enjoy the fruits of their success and others lay claim to the product of their labor. Not even the loudest and proudest socialists — and that tells you everything you need to know.
