Salvation Army’s Angel Trees go online

The popular Salvation Army Angel Tree program has added a new twist this year. It’s gone high-tech. For the first time, holiday donors can give to the Angel Tree program online.

The national nonprofit announced a partnership Friday with Target that will allow online giving this season. Donors can purchase a virtual angel ornament for any dollar amount and the Minneapolis-based retailer and the Salvation Army will use the Angel dollars to purchase toys, food and clothing for families around the country.

The partnership is part of an effort to make it easier for would-be donors to participate in the Angel Tree program. Each year, the Salvation Army places thousands of trees in office buildings, malls and other high-pedestrian areas. Each angel ornament has the name and age of a child and contributors must purchase appropriate gifts for that child. With the new program, the buying is left up to the Salvation Army and Target.

“This new online campaign at www.Target.com/salvationarmy will make it even easier for people to support The Salvation Army’s efforts to help people in need,” said Major George A. Hood, national community relations and development secretary for The Salvation Army, in a statement.

“The Christmas season is an important time for us to collect donations for people in need and we value Target’s continued partnership and shared goals around this effort.”
