McCarthy fires 66 in Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational

With competitive course record, Georgetown Prep grad leads Maryland

Recent Georgetown Prep graduate Denny McCarthy fired a 5-under-par 66 Sunday at Woodholme to lead Team Maryland to a victory in the third Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational.

McCarthy, 18, who is bound for the University of Virginia, shot 68 on Saturday. His two-day total of 134 was 12 strokes better than any of the 24 players in the event. His 66 was a competitive course record at the challenging, 6,923-yard course in Pikesville.

McCarthy, who played the first 14 holes in 7-under-par on Sunday, also shot the best round in the three-year history of the event. His stellar work provided Maryland (892) with a decisive margin over Virginia (905) and West Virginia (934).

Also contributing for Maryland were Ryan Cole of Linganore (76-71 – 147), Jordan Sweet of Bowie (72-79 – 151), Bart George of Arnold (73-80 – 153), Keegan Boone of Bethesda (79-75 – 154), Alex Church of Timonium (76-79 – 155), Brian McCormick of Kensington (77-80 – 157), and Tyler Silberberg of Columbia (78-80 – 158).

George, a recent graduate of Broadneck who is bound for Loyola of Baltimore, won the Bobby Gorin Memorial Thursday at Woodmont, rallying from 4 down to win on the first playoff hole.

Boone, a senior this fall at Gonzaga, played in the U.S. Junior Amateur, coming up one stroke short of a 12-man playoff for 10 slots in match play. Sweet, a recent graduate of DeMatha who is bound for Maryland, and Church also played in the Junior Am in at the Olympic Club in Bremerton, Wash.

Virginia was led by brothers Jake Mondy (76-70 – 146) and Ryan Mondy (73-75 – 148) of Blacksburg. Earlier this month, 17-year-old Ryan won the Bobby Bowers Memorial at Springfield Country Club.

Last fall, 18-year-old Jake won the Virginia public school Group AA state title, just two weeks before his father, Dave, a former player at Virginia Tech, died of a heart attack at age 56. Jake Mondy will play this fall at Auburn.
