Following his criticism of a federal judge’s Mexican heritage, Donald Trump now says he wouldn’t be comfortable having a Muslim judge handle a lawsuit involving him either.
“If it were a Muslim judge, would you also feel like they wouldn’t be able to treat you fairly because of that policy of yours?” CBS’ John Dickerson asked the presumptive Republican presidential nominee during an interview aired Sunday.
“It’s possible, yes,” Trump responded. “Yeah. That would be possible, absolutely.”
Trump has repeatedly claimed that U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel, an American citizen born in Indiana, has an “inherent conflict of interest” because he’s of Mexican descent.
“We’re building a wall. He’s a Mexican. The answer is he’s giving us unfair rulings. This judge is giving us unfair rulings,” Trump said in an interview on Friday.
“Isn’t there sort of a tradition, though, in America that we don’t judge people by who their parents were and where they came from?” Dickerson asked the billionaire on Sunday.
“I’m not talking about tradition. I’m talking about common sense, okay?” Trump responded.
“He’s somebody — he’s proud of his heritage. And I think that’s great that he’s proud of his heritage,” Trump said, adding, however, that Curiel is “not treating him fairly.”
