Arlington County wants you to know that the Internet was, in fact, created in Arlington County, and not by Al Gore.
The County Board will honor the scientists who created ARPANET, the government information-sharing network that served as the foundation for the Internet. Those scientists worked for the Defense Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency, or ARPA – an agency now known as DARPA.
ARPA scientists developed ARPANET in the early 1970s, while the agency was located along Arlington’s Wilson Boulevard.
The county will display two historic markers at the site in honor of the scientists. And on Tuesday, the county board will present certificates to Steve Lukasik, former ARPA director, and several of his colleagues.
