Bachmann hits Obama on Social Security

Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., released a campaign statement during the ongoing CNN/TeaParty debate that adroitly hits at Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, without naming her opponent. Instead, she takes aim at President Obama over Obamacare.

The statement expresses Bachmann’s opposition to “scaring seniors,” a conveniently-worded phrase that could target Perry – who called Social Security a Ponzi scheme in the last debate – and former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., who has taken fire from conservative critics, such as those at Redstate.com for demagoguing Perry on the issue by characterizing Perry’s position much more radically than it is. But then Bachmann makes a good point, and on often neglected, when she notes that Obamacare has already cut Medicare by $500 billion.

Here’s an excerpt from her statement:

Social Security and Medicare provide a safety net to millions of Americans. This is a system that many Americans have paid into their whole life. America needs to keep its promise to senior citizens . . . Obamacare only makes things worse by taking $500 billion out of Medicare, and the President’s so-called Payroll Tax Holiday has accelerated the insolvency of Social Security, requiring additional funds from general revenue to cover current benefits for seniors.
