In London, Melania Trump promotes Salvation Army and promises to try mincemeat pie

First lady Melania Trump has wowed a group who thought she’d be a bit stiff: school kids in London where she helped with a Salvation Army present wrapping drive.

“Everyone was expecting her to be very grumpy, but she was actually very nice,” a 10-year-old named Isabelle told the White House pool Wednesday. “I thought she was really fun,” she added.

Trump accompanied Suzanne Johnson, wife of U.S. Ambassador Woody Johnson, at the Baden Powell School for the Salvation Army event, during which she wrapped presents for the charity’s annual Christmas drive. Some of the presents included Trump’s “Be Best” logo highlighting her campaign to support children.

After wrapping presents, the kids sang her the song, “All I Want for Christmas is You,” to which she said, “Bravo.”

In a special touch, she later gave the children a Be Best ornament.

During the stop, made during the NATO summit attended by her husband, the children asked her lots of questions, including how the first family celebrates Christmas. At one point, she apparently said that she has never tasted a mincemeat pie, a holiday favorite for some.

“I was surprised at she’s never had a minced pie,” said Isabelle.

But, she added, “She said she was going to try one tonight.”

Another child interviewed by the pool, 9-year-old Quiana Mullings, was put off by the first lady’s makeup. “It made her look sad, but actually she was very happy,” she said.
