Crime history – Socialite gunned down in her Houston home

On this day, April 16, in 1997, Texas socialite Doris Angleton was killed in her home in the River Oaks area of Houston. Her bullet-riddled body was found by her husband, Robert Angleton, a bookie and former police informant. His brother Roger was arrested in Las Vegas. Police found $64,000 in cash with Robert’s fingerprints on them and an audiotape featuring a conversation about the murder: “Boom! Boom! Boom! … When she’s down, I go up to her and finish her,” said a voice, later identified as Roger. Police became convinced that the other man on the tape was Robert, and he was also arrested. Roger committed suicide in a Houston prison cell by cutting himself more than 50 times with a disposable razor. He left a note that cleared his brother. A jury acquitted later Robert. Afterward, Robert was indicted on federal conspiracy and murder-for-hire charges. He fled to the Netherlands but was apprehended by the Dutch government. Angleton later pleaded guilty to passport and tax fraud and was sentenced to 12 years.
