White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said customers “certainly” show an ID at the grocery store when purchasing alcohol, offering cover Wednesday to President Trump who claimed the previous evening that an ID was needed when buying groceries.
“You go to the grocery store, I go to the grocery store I’ve never had to show ID,” ABC News reporter Cecilia Vega said during Wednesday’s press briefing.
“Certainly if you go to a grocery store and you buy beer and wine you’re certainly going to show your ID,” Sanders said.
However, Vega pointed out that Trump claims he does not drink alcohol.
“He’s not saying every time he went in, he said when you go to the grocery store,” Sanders said.
“I’m pretty sure that everybody in here who’s been to a grocery store that’s purchased beer or wine has probably had to show their ID,” she added. “If they didn’t then that’s probably a problem with the grocery store.”
Press Sec. Sanders tells @CeciliaVega she’s “not sure” when Pres. Trump last went to the grocery sore, following the president’s comment that “you need ID” to buy groceries.

Trump made the comments Tuesday evening at a campaign rally in Tampa, Fla., as he described his support for enforcing stricter voter ID laws.
“You know if you go out and you want to buy groceries, you need a picture on a card,” Trump said. “You need ID.”
“In this country the only time you don’t need it, in many cases, is when you want to vote,” he added.
Republicans have pushed for tighter voter ID laws, while critics have pushed back and claimed that the laws would be a barrier keeping some minorities from voting.
