Clinton fundraises off calls for her to be jailed

CLEVELAND — Hillary Clinton’s campaign has found plenty of fundraising material in the speeches delivered here at the Republican National Convention.

While Donald Trump finds himself engulfed in controversy over his wife’s remarks Monday night, which appeared to plagiarize portions of a speech delivered by Michelle Obama in 2008, the Clinton campaign is shifting its focus toward other GOP convention speakers.

“Last night at the Republican convention, speaker after speaker accused Hillary of being a criminal,” the campaign wrote in an email to supporters Tuesday morning.

“One woman wanted to see Hillary in prison stripes. Later in the evening, the crowd chanted, ‘Lock her up!’ as the onstage speaker happily cheered them on,” the email continued, referring to a comment made by Patricia Smith, whose son Sean was killed in the 2012 Benghazi, Libya, terror attack.

“Hillary for prison. She deserves to be in stripes,” Smith told the GOP delegation Monday night, while appearing to fight back tears.

“This isn’t normal political behavior,” read the fundraising email. “Campaigns draw clear contrasts, sure … but there’s a difference between drawing a contrast and baselessly saying your opponent belongs in jail.”

The email continued, “It’s not about the money — it’s about showing you’re on Hillary’s team and ready to fight back against these over-the-line attacks.”

At the bottom of the email, Clinton supporters were encouraged to contribute $1 to put an end to Republicans who “get nasty.”
