Even G.W. Bush would have handled Iraq question better than Jeb: Former chief of staff

The man who authorized the invasion of Iraq, former president George W. Bush, would have handled the Iraq invasion question better than his brother former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush did, Bush’s former chief of staff said.

Jeb Bush floundered last week after Megyn Kelly asked him: “Knowing what we know now, would you have authorized the invasion?”

After telling Kelly he would have authorized the Iraq invasion, Jeb told Fox News’ Sean Hannity that he misheard the question before, several days later, settling on the answer that he would not have invaded.

“I think that he heard the question that he answered. He didn’t hear the real question that was asked,” former White House chief of staff Andrew Card said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“I don’t think George W. Bush would say, knowing now, he would have made that decision,” Card said.

“He said if he had been where his brother was, at the time his brother was there, with the information his brother had he would have done the same thing,” Card added.

Host Joe Scarborough asked why it took Jeb four days to articulate his position.

“It shouldn’t have taken him that long,” Card said. “I don’t think it would have taken his brother [George W.] that long to clear it up.”

Card was quick to pivot the conversation back to Hillary Clinton, saying that the Iraq invasion question is “so minor” compared with Hillary not taking questions at all.

Scarborough steered the conversation back to Jeb Bush, asking Card about Bush’s remark to a private gathering that he would use George W. Bush as his top Middle East adviser.

Card dismissed the question with: “I think every former president should be available to be an adviser to every sitting president.”
