Americans less confident in Trump than in Obama, Bush

Americans have decidedly less confidence in Donald Trump just before his inauguration than they did in his two most recent predecessors, a new poll finds.

Fewer than half of people surveyed think Trump will be able to prevent major scandals in his administration, handle an international crisis and use military force wisely, according to a Gallup poll. By contrast, more than 70 percent had such confidence in President Obama and former President George W. Bush.

Majorities of respondents said Trump will be able to manage the executive branch effectively, defend U.S. interests abroad, handle the economy effectively and work with Congress to get things done.

But many more expressed confidence that Obama and Bush could accomplish those benchmarks. While just 53 percent said Trump will manage the executive branch effectively, 84 percent felt that way about Obama and 77 percent felt that way about Bush.

The results for Trump were based on a Dec. 7-11 Gallup poll. They’re consistent with prior Gallup polls showing a much lower favorable rating than for past presidents-elect, the polling group said.
