An expert on Britain’s royal family said that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, might choose Alexander as a name that pays tribute to both British and American history.
“Alexander Hamilton is one of the founding fathers in the U.S.,” Victoria Arbiter told CBS. “So I think there are a lot of names here that work with the British Royal Family tree but also have strong roots in the U.S.”
Speculation is swirling over what name the 7 lbs 3 oz baby boy, born on Monday. Markle, 37, was born in Los Angeles, while Prince Harry, 34, was born in London. He is seventh in line for the throne.
Arbiter suggested that Alexander might be the name, given that Queen Elizabeth’s middle name is Alexandra and Alexander is be the masculine form. She also noted that Alexander has a strong foundation in U.S. history.
Victoria Arbiter is a long-time royal reporter who has written a book about Queen Elizabeth II and has driven go-karts with Diana, Princess of Wales, and was introduced to pop star George Michael by Prince Harry. She is the daughter of Dicky Arbiter, a former BBC broadcaster who became a spokesman for the Queen.
“I don’t have an inside track on the actual name, but I think when it comes to names we are looking at a very strong name because that is who Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are,” Vicky Arbiter said. “But I also think we are going to see a name that works on both sides of the pond.”
The name could also be a modern allusion to the hit musical “Hamilton,” with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, which has become a cultural touchstone among American liberals.
Alexander is currently the most popular bet on the gambling website Paddy Power, with James as the second favorite choice.
