Kids from Johns Hopkins design ties for charity

Patients of the Johns Hopkins Children?s Center took to the catwalk to model their hand-designed neckties as part of the Miracle Collection, a collaborative fashion event between Jos. A Bank Clothiers and the hospital.

Six-year-old Haley Danielson, who came to Johns Hopkins for an abscess in her throat, drew a snowman for her design because “it was that time of year, close to Christmas, and it was something that I like.” She added that making snowmen is her favorite thing about winter.

Savannah Talledo, 7, of Lexington, SC, traveled to Johns Hopkins for surgery related to bowel dysmotility. Her golf club design, called “Tee Time,” was based on her memories of golfing with her 9-year-old brother Patrick.

12-year-old George Kopsides Pugh?s tie, “Boat Show,” was inspired by his time spent boating with his grandfather. “I think it?s terrific and very nice that we are helping the hospital and saving kids? lives,” he said of the event.

Bel Air resident Lauren Franks, 11, has made several trips to Johns Hopkins because of her asthma and severe food allergies. Her tie, called “Fishin? Around,” featured multicolored swimming fish. She was nervous about all of the cameras but hid it well behind a bright smile and confident twirl at the end of the runway.

Nicole Praglowski, 8, of Joppa and Erica Swiger, 10, of Fallston also showed off designed for the holidays. Two of the designers, 14-year-old Brandi Lynn Cullen of Deal Island and 10-year-old Jordan McCann of Baltimore, were unable to participate in the show, but their designs were still displayed.

The children were asked by Jos. A Bank Clothiers to draw one of their favorite things. The company then chose eight designs, from fish to golf clubs to seahorses, to be made into neckties for their popular Miracle Collection. The fashion show, which took place at Kenilworth Mall in Towson, was the kick-off for the sale of the ties.

The children were joined by Baltimore?s media, including Donna Hamilton from WBAL and Adam May from WJZ.

The ties can be purchased at www.josbank.com and retail for $59.50. All proceeds from the ties will go to the Johns Hopkins Children?s Center. The center, while providing general and specialized medical care to children in and outside the state of Maryland, also conducts research to improve treatment for sick children and provides education for pediatricians in training. Patrons who wish to donate funds to the Center can specify where they wish the money to go.

This is the second in a series of weekly articles to run throughout the season of giving.
