Police: Four weekend shootings not a sign of rising crime

Anne Arundel County police said the four shootings in the county this weekend are not a sign of rising crime.

Three victims were struck in a drive-by shooting Saturday in Annapolis, police said.

Shortly after 1 a.m., three teenagers were hanging out in the 1900 block of Copeland Street when a dark-colored sport utility vehicle drove by them and turned around.

When the car drove by again, two suspects opened fire on the group with an unknown type of gun. A 19-year-old male suffered gunshot wounds to both arms, a 17-year-old male was struck in the leg and a 13-year-old female was struck in the hand.

Annapolis police officer Hal Dalton said the victims did not know why they were targeted, but the area is notorious for crime.

“Fortunately, our crime rate is still about the same, but unfortunately, this is nothing out of the ordinary, statistically speaking,” Dalton said.

The next day, Anne Arundel police found a man near the Lloyd Keyser Community Center in Brooklyn suffering from two gunshot wounds to his back, Cpl. Mark Shawkey said.

The man told police he never saw the shooters.

Nearby, police found another manwho said he was struck by a stray bullet and heard gunshots in the area of the community center.

Both men were treated and released from local hospitals.

No arrests have been made.
