Pepco bails on P.G. County Council

Two Pepco representatives canceled a Tuesday briefing in front of the Prince George’s County Council, saying they needed to focus on preparations for more winter weather that could cause more power outages.

The representatives likely would have been asked to defend the utility’s response to Wednesday’s snowstorm that left about 180,000 Pepco customers without power and has angered local residents and officials.

The utility promised to reschedule, according to council spokeswoman Karen Campbell.

Pepco informed the council that they couldn’t attend Tuesday’s meeting after Monday afternoon’s weather report showed sleet, ice and frozen rain posing threats of more outages, she said.

Campbell said the council had requested that Pepco — the electricity supplier for the District and its Maryland suburbs — give an overview of services last week. Kim Watson, the vice president of Maryland affairs for Pepco, and Gary Keeler, the reliability project manager for the utility, were slated to attend.

Clay Anderson, a Pepco spokesman, said Pepco has kept more than 500 workers from other states on call in case the ice,

sleet and freezing rain forecast to hit the area Tuesday and Wednesday cause more outages.
