GMU board elects Clemente as new rector

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — George Mason University has a new rector.

On Tuesday, the university’s Board of Visitors unanimously elected board member Daniel Clemente to the post, where he will oversee and lead the university’s 16-member policy-making board.

Clemente succeeds Ernst Volgenau (VOLE-geh-noh), who served on the board for eight years and was ineligible under Virginia law to serve another term as rector.

Clemente, a lawyer, banker and consultant from McLean, was first appointed to the board in 2010.

Clemente’s election comes as Gov. Bob McDonnell appointed three new members to the board — former Fairfax County Supervisor Stu Mendelsohn, businessmen Robert Pence and Siddique Sheikh.

On Monday, the university’s new president, Angel Cabrera, took the reins from retiring President Alan Merten.
