Leonsis’ film company snags investment D.C.’s SnagFilms has landed a $10 million investment that will allow the distributor of independent documentaries to expand into fictional indie films.

The capital infusion came from new investors New Enterprise Associates and Comcast Interactive Capital as well as existing investor Steve Case and SnagFilms founder Ted Leonsis.

Leonsis said SnagFilms didn’t need the money but wanted to grab the opportunity to involve New Enterprise and Comcast as it expands the content of its independent films and the ways in which they are distributed.

Carlyle finalizes purchases

The Carlyle Group has completed its previously announced acquisitions of CommScope Inc. and Syniverse Technologies.

Both deals, initially struck in October, proceeded as originally outlined. The D.C. company paid about $3.9 billion, including assumption of debt, for CommScope of Hickory, N.C., and $2.6 billion for Syniverse Technologies of Tampa, Fla.

CommScope produces fiber-optic and wireless telecommunications equipment for high-speed networks.

Syniverse makes mobile roaming and messaging technologies used by wireless, cable and Internet providers.

Discovery’s health programs find new home

Discovery Communications has found a new home for some of the programming displaced by the arrival of Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network.

It will rebrand its existing FitTV channel as Discovery Fit & Health beginning Feb. 1.

The Oprah Winfrey Network replaced the Discovery Health channel, and by rebranding its fitness channel as both a fitness and health destination, the Silver Spring cable network can move some of its most popular Discovery Health programs to a new home.
