Lax girls pick D-I colleges

St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes senior midfielder Mia Hurrin and Good Counsel senior defender Lauren Fenlon have both verbally committed to play college lacrosse next season.

According to St. Stephen’s coach Kathy Jenkins, Hurrin will play at North Carolina. Fenlon, who led Good Counsel to its third straight Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title last spring, is headed to Notre Dame.

“North Carolina was always the dream school for Mia,” Jenkins said. “There was a lot of interest in her from some of the top programs in the country. But that was the place she really wanted to be.”

Over the summer, Fenlon, Hurrin and St. Stephen’s teammate Liz Downs (Virginia) were each named to the 24-woman training camp roster for the United State Under-19 national team that will compete in the International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse Associations World Championships next August.

Hurrin, one of nine Division I recruits for St. Stephen’s, registered 22 goals and five assists last season for the Saints, who finished 17-1 and won their 12th straight Independent Schools League title. Fenlon enters her fourth year as a defensive starter for Good Counsel.
