Verizon will no longer automatically deliver residential white pages to customers in Virginia.
The company’s request to cease deliveries was granted by the State Corporation Commission on Thursday, after Verizon argued most people now search for telephone numbers online rather than in their hefty phone books. About 1,640 tons of paper will be saved, Verizon estimates.
As more land lines are disconnected in favor of cell phones, which aren’t listed in the white pages – Verizon officials say at a rate of 10 percent each year – the phone books are becoming obsolete.
White pages are still available online or in print by request.
