Second gentleman to teenagers: ‘Blind dates can work’

As he invents the role of the second gentleman of the United States, Doug Emhoff is also letting his hair down big time and giving his audiences a peek into his nine-year relationship with Vice President Kamala Harris.

At Washington’s Dunbar High School this week, for example, he talked about the importance of voting and reading and then was asked about how he met his wife.

“This is a pretty good story,” he said to giggles from his audience. “It was a blind date.”

The Hollywood lawyer said it all started in 2013 when he met with House Party director and Django Unchained producer Reggie Hudlin and his wife Chrisette Suter. The two were seeking “legal advice” from the entertainment lawyer.

“By the end of that hour, Chrisette was trying to set me up with her best friend, who happened to be named Kamala Harris. And so, we met about a week later, and I would say it was love at first sight, and we’ve been together ever since,” Emhoff said to awes from teenagers in the audience.

His lesson: “Blind dates. They can work,” he told the students.
