A conservative judicial group launched a seven-figure ad campaign Thursday that applauds several U.S. senators for pledging to support voters’ wishes regarding the next Supreme Court justice.
Judicial Crisis Network made the large national ad buy on TV, radio and digital mediums to encourage the public to hold their senators accountable when voting on President Obama’s nomination to the highest court, if it comes to a vote.
“The American people are fed up with Washington politicians, and the selection of the next justice is simply too important to leave to politics as usual. Give the people a voice. Let them decide in November what kind of Court they want,” Carrie Severino, chief counsel for JCN and former law clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas, said in a statement.
“Let the People Decide” props up Sens. Kelly Ayotte of N.H., Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Ron Johnson of Wis., John McCain of Ariz., Mitch McConnell of Ky., Rob Portman of Ohio, and Pat Toomey of Penn., for initial comments made following Justice Antonin Scalia’s death.
Sen. Grassley has backed down on his opposition to an Obama nomination, saying Thursday he plans to take the process “one step at a time.”
The TV spot will run in Washington, D.C. during Sunday news programs in addition to regional markets each of the senators represent.
