El Salvador President Nayib Bukele was seemingly unaffected by the political furor stoked by the recent phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, instead dismissing the controversy as “silly” and a waste of time.
During a Thursday interview with Fox News host Martha MacCallum, Bukele covered a wide range of topics, but closed the interview with a question regarding the impeachment inquiry that has recently roiled the United States.
“I think it’s silly,” Bukele replied when MacCallum broached the subject. “I’m not going to get into U.S. politics, because I can’t. But actually, I think most people outside don’t even care about that. So I think you’re just wasting our time talking about something that nobody cares about.”
MacCallum wondered if Bukele considered the president’s phone call to be “normal,” as Trump has claimed, to which Bukele answered, “If you go outside and you ask normal people outside if they care about that, they don’t.”
Bukele conceded that he is concerned about the privacy of conversations he might have with the president, however, saying, “Before I thought, you know, private conversations were private conversations. But now, I’ll be more careful if I say something.”
The Salvadorian president was in New York City with other world leaders for the United Nations General Assembly this week, where he held a joint press conference with Trump. Bukele has attempted to help the U.S. as it deals with an influx of Central American migrants, and took responsibility over the summer for the father and young daughter who drowned in the Rio Grande.
