Tied up? Poll shows close race between Youngkin and McAuliffe

The race for Virginia governor is getting tight.

That’s at least according to a poll of 816 likely voters — within its margin of error. Republican Glenn Youngkin has a slight edge over Democrat Terry McAuliffe at 48.7% to 47.9%, Cygnal polling reported.

The two were tied at 46% in a Monmouth University poll released Oct. 20, with a slimmer gap than the 5-point lead McAuliffe held in September at 48% to 43%. In a separate poll released Oct. 8, McAuliffe led Youngkin 49% to 45%.

“Independent voters and parents of K-12 students are stampeding to support Republicans Glenn Youngkin, Winsome Sears, Jason Miyares and GOP state house candidates,” said pollster Brent Buchanan, CEO of Cygnal. “In an interesting twist of political fate, voters under the age of 55 are strongly for Republicans.”

McAuliffe campaigned with the Dave Matthews Band on Sunday at a get-out-the-vote rally. President Joe Biden is also set to hit the road with McAuliffe on Tuesday.

Former Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli believes Youngkin will win the race.

“I think this is going to be a Republican sweep,” he said Monday. “That’s what it feels like right now, and I don’t see anything changing, certainly not the arrival of Joe Biden on this side of the Potomac to change that direction.”

The Cygnal poll was conducted between Oct. 19-21 and had a margin of error of 3.43 percentage points.
