Washington Post columnist suggests Never Trumpers join Democratic party

Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson says it’s time for Republicans who can’t stand President Trump to join the opposition party.

So-called Never Trumpers, Robinson wrote in a recent column for the Washington Post, have a decision to make sooner rather than later.

“I, for one, have pretty much had it with the chorus of center-right voices braying that the Democrats are heading for certain doom — and the nation for four more years of President Trump — if the party picks a nominee who actually embraces the party’s ideals,” Robinson said. “Elections are choices. These Never Trumpers will have to make one.”

Last week’s Democratic debates highlighted the party’s unity on issues like healthcare, immigration, and income equality, Robinson said.

That does not bode well for recovering Republicans looking for a challenger to Trump who reflects the GOP’s traditional values, Robinson said.

“Break out the smelling salts,” he wrote. “I think several refugees from the GOP, pontificating on Twitter and the nation’s leading op-ed pages, just fainted dead away.”

As he has done in previous columns, Robinson lamented the failure of the Democratic base to turn out in key states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

These same voters should embrace independents and Republicans who do not support Trump in 2020, he said.

“The party should welcome refugee Never Trumpers with open arms,” Robinson said. “But they can’t be Never Democrats, too.”
