Democratic Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee gave some love to a bug earlier this week, according to a reporter’s account on Twitter. David Klepper, who covers the Rhode Island Statehouse for the Associated Press, caught Chaffee in this act:
Walking up statehouse steps I observed @LincolnChafee save a praying mantis. Used paper to move it to grass. Then got in car and drove away.

PETA applauded the governor’s actions. “If it’s true that he took the time to help a praying mantis who had ended up on a pedestrian walkway, Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee reminded all of us that even the smallest lives are important,” a spokesman for the group told Yeas & Nays. “PETA hopes the governor’s kind action will encourage others always to lend a helping hand to any individual who needs it.”
