Newton-John, Stowers silent on 2008 election

Who said celebrities can’t keep their mouths shut about politics? We found two who are pretty mum about the whole 2008 presidential election: actress/musician Olivia Newton-John and “America’s Next Top Model’s” Saleisha Stowers.

“I don’t vote,” said Newton-John. OK … but who do you like? “I decided that I don’t even want to talk about

politics.” Alrighty, then.

Stowers, what about you? “I don’t want to comment on that.” Fine. If you won’t talk about your vote for the 44th president, what’s your take on the 43rd? “I like to keep that to myself.”

Hmph. Perhaps the fallout from the Rev. Jeremiah Wright has made everyone tight-lipped about their true political beliefs.

We caught up to Newton-John in advance of her benefit concert tonight at the National Geographic Society. The event benefits the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research at the National Geographic Society. And Stowers, who won Cycle 9 of “America’s Next Top Model,” was in town Monday night for the Sweet Charity … Des Alpes Chocolate Fashion Show at the Mandarin Oriental hotel. Stowers walked the runway dressed in a chocolate outfit (which involved getting dressed in a walk-in refrigerator).

For Stowers, it was her first visit to Washington and she certainly was impressed. She and her mom spent part of Monday taking in the sights: The White House, Ford’s Theatre and the Washington Monument.

“It’s so cool!” Stowers said. “It’s just amazing to be here and get a little glimpse of what I can. It’s so much different than L.A. It’s homey and really beautiful. There’s so much history here.” You don’t say… .  But she may need a refresher course in history, calling Ford’s Theatre “the place where Lincoln died” (actually he was just shot there).

For all of Newton-John’s anti-political sentiments, she may eventually be forced to meddle in the dark world of government if she wants her objectives achieved, confessing that “the government will probably have to step in at some point” in order to stop the destruction of the Amazon rain forest.

Just don’t expect her to actually vote for whatever government that will be.
